Plicochonetes was named by Paeckelmann (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 24,41,400]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Chonetes (Plicochonetes) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Chonetes by Reed (1944); to Plicochonetinae by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plicochonetini by Waterhouse (2004).
