Muscites was named by Brongniart (1828) [Type specie: Muscites tournalii Brongniart 1828.]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Muscites tournalii.

It was assigned to Bryophyta by Brongniart (1828) and Andrews (1970); and to Bryopsida by Mamontov and Ignatov (2020).
