Richthofenioidea was named by Waagen (1885) [Nom. correct. Brunton et al. (1995, p. 933) for Richthofeniacea Muir-Wood (1955) nom. transl. Richthofeniidae Waagen (1885)].

It was assigned to Lyttoniidina by Williams et al. (2000).
