Taxonomy
Goniatites lyoni was named by Meek and Worthen (1860). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Protocanites lyoni by Campbell and Engel (1963) and Gordon (1964); it was recombined as Prolecanites lyoni by Smith (1903) and Gordon (1986).
