Rhytisia was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7,1246]. Its type is Rhytisia rugosa.

It was assigned to Incisiini by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
