Rigbyella was named by Stehli (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7,403]. It is the type genus of Rigbyellidae.

It was assigned to Rigbyellidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
