Planocranidae was named by Li (1976).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Planocraniidae by Brochu (2013), Rio and Mannion (2021) and Darlim et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Sebecosuchia by Li (1976); to Crocodylia by Brochu (2013) and Rio and Mannion (2021); and to Eusuchia by Darlim et al. (2022).
