Costellarina was named by Cooper and Muir-Wood (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Costellaria costellata.

It was assigned to Institellinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
