Productus pyxidatus was named by Hall (1858). It is the type species of Orbinaria.
It was recombined as Productella pyxidata by Hall (1858), Weller (1914) and Sutton (1938); it was recombined as Orbinaria pyxidata by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960).
