Sandrella was named by Waterhouse (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Sandrella platina.

It was assigned to Quinquenellinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
