It was considered an invalid subgroup of Palaeoptera by Carpenter (1992); it was corrected as Cryptoveniidae by Handlirsch (1919), Bolton (1921), Handlirsch (1922), Pruvost (1930) and Prokop and Ren (2007).
It was assigned to Palaeodictyoptera by Handlirsch (1919), Bolton (1921), Handlirsch (1922) and Pruvost (1930); and to Breyerioidea by Prokop and Ren (2007).
