Luperus was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Luperiidae.

It was reranked as Galeruca (Luperus) by Latreille (1802).

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762), Schaeffer (1766) and Latreille (1796); to Galeruca by Latreille (1802); to Galerucinae by von Schlechtendal (1894) and Meunier (1923); and to Luperini by Bukejs and Bezděk (2014).
