Siphonosia was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Siphonosia alleni. It is the type genus of Siphonosiinae.
It was assigned to Siphonosiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
