Sowerbyites was named by Teichert (1937) [Sepkoski age: O (Llde-u) O (Cara-u)]. Its type is Sowerbyites medioseptatus.
It was assigned to Leptestiinae by Mitchell (1977); to Syndielasmatidae by Williams et al. (2000); to Palaeostrophomeninae by Percival et al. (2001); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
