Stegacanthia was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 955].

It was assigned to Echinoconchidae by Brunton and Champion (1974); to Sentosiini by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
