Sulcirugaria was named by Waterhouse (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: P u Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Sulcirugaria subquadrata.

It was assigned to Plicochonetinae by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); to Rugosochonetidae by Shen et al. (2003); and to Rugariini by Waterhouse (2004).
