Tectarea was named by Licharew (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: P Wc Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538]. Its type is Tectarea robinsoni.

It was assigned to Gemmellaroiinae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960); to Gemmellaroiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
