Tulcumbella was named by Campbell and Engel (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l Sepkoski's reference number: 994]. Its type is Tulcumbella microstriata.

It was assigned to Chonostrophiidae by Campbell and Engel (1963) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
