Tuphella was named by Gorochov (1986). Its type is Tuphella rasnitzyni. It is the type genus of Tuphellidae, Tuphellinae.
It was assigned to Cyrtophyllitinae by Gorochov (1986); and to Tuphellinae by Gorochov (1988) and Gorochov (1995).
