Xenosteges was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Xenosteges adherens.

It was assigned to Echinosteginae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
