Xestosia was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Xestosia obsolescens.

It was assigned to Paucispiniferini by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rugatiini by Lazarev (2011).
