Camerella was named by Billings (1859). Its type is Camerella volborthi.
It was assigned to Porambonitidae by Raymond (1911); to Brachiopoda by Reed (1917); to Pentamerida by Sepkoski (2002); to Camerellidae by Oraspold (1956) and Benedetto (2003); and to Camerellinae by Bassett and Cocks (1974), Mitchell (1977), Williams et al. (2002) and Hansen and Holmer (2011).
