Katepensaurus was named by Ibiricu et al. (2013). Its type is Katepensaurus goicoecheai.
It was assigned to Rebbachisaurinae by Fanti et al. (2015); to Limaysaurinae by Ibiricu et al. (2015); to Rebbachisauridae by Mannion et al. (2019); and to Rebbachisauridae by Ibiricu et al. (2013) and Paulina-Carabajal and Calvo (2021).
