Mesonomia was named by Ulrich and Cooper (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm u O l Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Mesonomiinae.

It was assigned to Mesonomiinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Pentamerida by Sepkoski (2002).
