Anthracoptilus was named by Lameere (1917). It is the type genus of Anthracoptilidae.
It was assigned to Ischnoneuridae by Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013); and to Anthracoptilidae by Handlirsch (1922), Carpenter (1992), Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2004), Nel et al. (2015) and Guan et al. (2016).
