Cheliphlebidae was named by Handlirsch (1906).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Protorthoptera by Carpenter (1992); it was corrected as Cheliphlebiidae by Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922) and Aristov (2014).

It was assigned to Protoblattoidea by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1911), Handlirsch (1919) and Handlirsch (1922); and to Orthopterida by Aristov (2014).
