Taxonomy
Virgiana was named by Twenhofel (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant. Its type is Pentamerus barrandi. It is the type genus of Virgianidae, Virgianinae.

It was assigned to Virgianidae by Boucot and Johnson (1964); to Pentamerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Virgianinae by Williams et al. (2002).
