Taxonomy
Atheta was named by Thomson (1858). It is extant. It is the type genus of Athetini, Athetae.
It was assigned to Staphylinidae by Wickham (1913); to Athetina by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Athetini by Yamamoto et al. (2016).
