Akania patagonica

Taxonomy
Akania patagonica was named by Gandolfo et al. (1988). It is not extant. Its type locality is Hunco, which is in a Paleocene/Eocene lacustrine delta front tuff in the La Huitrera Formation of Argentina.

M. A. Gandolfo et al. 1988Symmmetrical leaf; narrow oblong; probably about 14cm long and 1.2 cm to 3.7cm wide. Apex acute; base acute symmetrical to obtuse asymmetrical. Serrate margin. Teeth are present in both margins, although a marked difference exists in the number present in each one; they are of the C3 type (concave/concave) (Hickey 1973), ending in a 2mm long apical spine. The venation of the teeth is given by a main third order vein that arises from an arch formed by the union of the secondary vein with the super-adjacent seconsary (brochidodromous arch)and enters eccentrically (Figs. 5-7). Other tertiary veins, arising from the same arch, reach a fimbrial vein. Petiole strong, 3-6mm long. Pinnate venation; camptodromous brochidodromous. Primary veinstrong, straight, showing generally an inferior keel and a few ribs as it draws near the middle part of the leaf (Fig. 6). About to 15 pairs of secondary veins emerging at a moderate acute angle and steep bend before joining the super-adjacent secondary at an acute angle. One or two tertiary vein arches occur between the secondary brochidodromous arch and the margin. A simple intersecondary vein may or may not exist, but if it does then it is short and never reaches the brochidodromous arch. The intercostal areas are small. Tertiary veins emerging at right angles, with orthogonal reticulate pattern (Figs. 10,11). Fourth order veins scarce, thick when compared to those of the third order, and orthogonal reticulate. Fifth order veins scarce, thick when compared with the fourth order ones, and orthogonal reticulate. The marginal ultimate venation is fimbrial (Figs. 5,6,8,11). The areoles are well developed, medium sized, quadrangular and oriented with simple veinlets preserved in only one of the specimens.
