Schizoneura was named by Schimper and Mougeot (1844). Its type is Schizoneura paradoxa.

It was assigned to Equisetaceae by Knowlton (1919); and to Equisetales by Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Brauckmann (1978) and Chandra and Tewari (1991).
