Rhynchonella inconstans was named by Sowerby (1821).

It was recombined as Terebratula inconstans by Sowerby (1816); it was recombined as Septaliphoria inconstans by Kamyshan and Babanova (1973); it was recombined as Torquirhynchia inconstans by Adabi and Ager (1997).
