Aphelesia was named by Cooper (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo T Plio-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is the type genus of Aphelesiinae.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aphelesiinae by Cooper (1959), Bitner and Martinell (2001) and Williams et al. (2002).
