Chaeniorhynchus was named by Cooper and Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Chaeniorhynchus inauris.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Strigirhynchiinae by Williams et al. (2002).
