Coprides was named by Leach (1815). It is extant. Its type is Copris.

It was corrected as Coprinae by Kabakov (1988); it was reranked as the tribe Coprini by Statz (1952), Bouchard et al. (2011) and Tarasov and Dimitrov (2016).

It was assigned to Coprophaginae by Statz (1952); to Scarabaeidae by Kabakov (1988); and to Scarabaeinae by Bouchard et al. (2011) and Tarasov and Dimitrov (2016).
