Colophragma was named by Cooper and Dutro (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-u D Fame-l Sepkoski's reference number: 708]. Its type is Colophragma ellipticum.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pugnacidae by Cooper and Dutro (1982) and Williams et al. (2002).
