Disphenia was named by Grant (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: P Djhu P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 871,881,1066]. Its type is Disphenia myiodes. It is the type genus of Dispheniidae.

It was assigned to Dispheniidae by Grant (1988); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
