Divaricosta was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Divaricosta squarrosa.

It was assigned to Pontisiinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
