Rhopalastrum was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: J u R]. It is extant. Its type is Haliomma lagena.

It was assigned to Spongodiscidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
