Eremithyris was named by Brügge (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: P Djhu]. Its type is Eremithyris muhlbergensis.

It was assigned to Dielasmatidae by Brügge (1973); to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Girtyellinae by Williams et al. (2006).
