Hemithiris was named by d'Orbigny (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Hemithyris by Dall (1895); it was misspelled as Hemithyris by Cooper (1959), Williams et al. (2002) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Brachiopoda by Dall (1895); to Hemithyridae by Cooper (1959); to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hemithirididae by Williams et al. (2002).
