Heteromychus was named by Cooper (1989) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath-u J Call-l Sepkoski's reference number: 877]. It is not extant. Its type is Heteromychus magnificus.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Septirhynchiidae by Williams et al. (2002).
