Hypsiptycha was named by Wang (1949). Its type is Hypsiptycha hybrida.
It was assigned to Orthorhynchulidae by Rõõmusoks (1964); to Rhynchotrematidae by Macomber (1970); to Rhynchotrematinae by Mitchell (1977); to Lepidocyclinae by Amsden (1983) and Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
