Iotina was named by Cooper and Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Iotina minuta.

It was assigned to Petasmatheridae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
