Taxonomy
Kawhiarhynchia was named by MacFarlan (1992) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-l J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1068]. Its type is Rhynchonella (Cryptorhynchia) kawhiana.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acanthothiridinae by Williams et al. (2002).
