Leiorhynchus was named by Hall (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 25,538]. It is the type genus of Leiorhynchidae, Leiorhynchinae.

It was reranked as Rhynchonella (Leiorhynchus) by Walcott (1884).

It was assigned to Rhynchonella by Walcott (1884); to Leiorhynchinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
