Lirellaria was named by Cooper and Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538]. Its type is Lirellaria costellata.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pontisiinae by Williams et al. (2002).
