Lissopleura was named by Whitfield (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi Sepkoski's reference number: 25].

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trigonirhynchiinae by Savage and Goodwin (1998) and Williams et al. (2002).
