Maxillirhynchia was named by Buckman (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori J Bajo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Maxillirhynchia implicata.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Diholkorhynchiinae by Williams et al. (2002).
