Norella was named by Bittner (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-u Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538,1066]. It is the type genus of Norellinae, Norellidae.

It was reranked as Rhynchonella (Norella) by Bittner (1892).

It was assigned to Rhynchonella by Bittner (1892); to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Norellinae by Williams et al. (2002).
