Stromerosuchus was named by Kuhn (1936). Its type is Stromerosuchus aegyptiacus. It is the type genus of Stromerosuchidae.
It was assigned to Crocodilia by Kuhn (1964); to Stromerosuchidae by Kuhn (1966); and to Aegyptosuchidae by Molnar (1989).
